MOTB behind the scenes…
As I create each new ‘webisode’ of MOTB, I usually post in progress shots of the art on Twitter/Facebook as I go. The process of making MOTB has undergone many changes since I posted the first panel several months ago. It started out as a totally ‘analog’ process, meaning everything was drawn without the aid of the computer. It only came into use when it was time to scan, do the text & upload it to the site. Otherwise all the lineart, inking, washes, etc. was completely done old school. Red Sable brushes, india ink, whiteout, etc.
From those first few postings, the format changed and evolved with the discovery of WordPress and the ComicPress theme. The combination of those two blogging apps changed the way I could deliver MOTB, so I changed over to a full comic ‘page’ format so I could make the comic how I had originally envisioned it.
A few months ago I purchased an Axiotron Modbook, allowing me to work 100% digitally — drawing on screen directly into Photoshop, cutting out the hand pencils, inking, scanning & cleanup of the original art. It’s been a challenge moving to a full digital workflow after doing it the old school way for most of my life.
Anyway, here’s some of those behind the scene shots of MOTB in progress. The pencils (blue) is a split between the Modbook and done on traditional illustration board. I’m still kind of hammering out the workflow so it suits me best.
Moving to a full digital method of doing art has been exciting — lots to learn yet on top of the tons of stuff I’ve already learned but its all pushed my work to new levels of creativity, confidence and professionalism.
That’s all for now. More tomorrow!
